How is ketamine therapy administered?

Route of administration (ROA) is based on diagnosis, presenting concerns, treatment goals, and medical status.

Common ROA include:

Intramuscular (IM)

Intravenous (IV)

Oral (lozenge)

Nasal (Spravato spray)

What is ketamine intramuscular (IM) therapy?

Intramuscular (IM) ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) includes a subcutaneous shot in the upper deltoid given by a qualified medical provider. Additional doses can be administered depending on needs and indications. Integration therapy includes psychotherapeutic interventions before, during, after, and in between dosing sessions.

IM dosing session medical management includes medical check and vitals to proceed to dosing, continuous vitals throughout dosing, medication administration and ongoing oversight by medical provider. IM dosing therapeutic management includes managing expectations, paced breathing, meditation, setting an intention, ensuring therapeutic setting, and ongoing oversight by support and therapy staff.

What is ketamine intravenous (IV) infusion therapy?

Intravenous (IV) infusion ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) includes IV infusion over approximately 40 minutes, conducted by a qualified medical provider. Integration therapy includes psychotherapeutic interventions before, after, and in between dosing sessions.

IV dosing session medical management includes medical check and vitals to proceed to dosing, continuous vitals throughout dosing, medication administration and ongoing oversight by medical provider. IV dosing therapeutic management includes managing expectations, paced breathing, meditation, setting an intention, ensuring therapeutic setting, and ongoing oversight by support and therapy staff.

What is ketamine oral (lozenge) therapy?

Oral (lozenge) ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) includes individual administration of lozenge during a dosing session with a qualified mental health provider. Oral administration is considered psycholytic, which facilitates emotional expression and ability to access deeper therapeutic work. During oral dosing sessions, clients are able to engage in therapeutic discussion with the therapist. Integration therapy sessions are also conducted in between dosing sessions to help solidify connections.

Prior to oral dosing sessions, a full medical intake has been conducted and individuals bring their lozenge prescription to session with their therapist. Oral dosing therapeutic management includes managing expectations, paced breathing, meditation, setting an intention, ensuring therapeutic setting, and ongoing therapeutic intervention by qualified mental health provider.

What is ketamine nasal (Spravato) therapy?

Spravato is an FDA-approved ketamine nasal spray for depression. Spravato treatment is not considered ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, thus focused psychotherapeutic integration therapy is not part of Spravato therapy.
