Why People Don’t Want Help

While I cannot speak for everyone, in my profession as a mental health/marriage and family therapist, I have discovered that the reason most people don’t want–or, to be more accurate, will not– accept help, all comes back to an underlying  fear. Fear that, by accepting help, something worse than living in their current situation could prevail. While fears may vary for each individual, below are a list of common underlying fears which revolve around the loss of safety.  (more…)

The New Year has come and gone, and so has our resolution to keep our New Year goals. What happened? We were so committed to going to the gym every day, meditating and writing in our journals consistently. Sobering up. Gaining or losing that weight, spending more quality time with those we love. Learning to cook, or whatever your individual goal may have been.

As a therapist, I’m often asked what the most common issue I see in couples therapy. While many expect to hear things such as infidelity or pornography, the truth is that poor communication is the leading issue I deal with in therapy.
